Paperweight

Giving thoughtful weight to paper in the age of artifical intelligence

From celebrity apologies to well-wrought aphorisms, notes as a genre and technology are making a comeback in contemporary textual cultures. This project was a rethinking of how we practice notetaking, reconceptualizing received distinctions between entities, acts, and feedback in how we give textual form to thoughts. Conceived around the metaphor of the paperweight, the wager of this project is that the weight of paper is minimal but substantial. Paper is the palimpsest that connects thinkers past and present — by rewiring the interplay between acts, entities, and feedback in-app (which is what gives the design its weight) according to the extant research on how a wide array of contemporary authors and historical thinkers put their thoughts to paper, the project seeks to empower users to try on, reclaim, and repurpose the idiosyncratic notetaking practices that inspired great thinkers of the past.
